This year, during Black History Month, some AMAZING THINGS HAPPENED! We'd like to close out this month by acknowledging some of the greatness that took place in the last 29 days (Yep, it's a leap year and we were granted on more day to celebrate). We're going to shed light on some of the work that we do in our community. Check out how Author Sontia Mason used her books and art to spread her 'Black Girl Magic', as she inspired and educated kids from USD 259 School District about what she does for a living and encouraged them to follow their DREAMS!
"I was recently granted the opportunity to showcase some of my heart at the '9th Annual Art That Touches Your Heart' event that took place a the Wichita State University Rhatigan Center." Sontia explains. " Standing in front of the kids from USD 259 made me realize that they were our future doctors, lawyers and entrepreneurs. It was an extremely humbling experience. I realized very quickly that these children were our future and that it was my JOB (as well as everybody else’s) to not only lead by example, but to continue paving the way for the growing youth who dare to take their OWN path."
"I think that a big problem in the urban community is that some children don't get to see REAL entrepreneurs, or haven’t been exposed fully to their endless possibilities. I hope to be the spark that creates the fire of entrepreneurship in the kids that I spoke to today and I hope that the fire continues to burn for generations to come."
In addition to being able to present her artwork to the kids, Sontia was also able to meet a lot of essential black business owners and well known artists here in Wichita. "The amount of love and talent circulating through that room was remarkable and the connections that I made are sure to last a lifetime. I'm sure that our ancestors were looking down on us, smiling that day!" Sontia shared.
